We need a local body to administer an urban area as large as Bengaluru. This type of decentralised governance was seen as important in no less a document than our Constitution. There is an entire article in the Constitution devoted to municipalities and their set up! As per Article 243 of the Indian Constitution, there should be devolution of powers & responsibilities upon Municipal Corporations to enable them to function as institutions of self-government for cities like Bengaluru.

BBMP is the organization which governs & administers grassroots functions of Bengaluru like garbage, roads, potholes, street lights, parks, storm water drains etc. The roots of the BBMP go back more than 150 years! The first municipal board was formed a long time ago, in 1862.

Corporators of all the wards of Bengaluru together constitute the BBMP Council which runs Bengaluru, just like the MLAs constitute the State Legislative Assembly which runs the state and MPs constitute the Lok Sabha which runs the country!

Corporators are elected by the people through an election conducted for BBMP once every 5 years, just like the Lok Sabha elections or the State Assembly elections Did you know that the BBMP is the fourth largest municipal body in the country?

For ease of administration, Bengaluru (and all cities) are divided into Wards, with each Ward electing a Corporator each during BBMP elections For administrative purposes, the city is divided into nine zones, which are further subdivided into a total of 198 wards.
